Video links have become even more important to your search engine optimisation link in recent times.

 

Ever since Google bought YouTube it has been obvious that they would place a higher value on links to your web pages from video sites, especially YouTube.  We have known for many years that the Google robots that examine all websites place a great deal of importance in the quality of backlinks to your web pages.  In fact it is the major input to deciding whether your web page is an authority page on the subject you are writing about.

 

Many SEO amateurs make the big mistake of spending a lot of money to buy links to their chosen page without realizing that 99% of the links they buy are of PR 1 quality.  PR stands for page rank and search engines use page rank to decide the importance of all websites.  Web pages have a PR of between zero and 10.  What amateurs do not understand is that they can buy 1000 back links from sites with a PR 0 or PR 1 page and another website can have 10 backlinks one of which is a PR 3 and they will rank above all of the 1000 PR 0 and PR 1 links.

 

Video sites have PR ranks of between 7 and 10; just imigine the weight they give to your webpage if you have links from them?

The day has arrived when all businesspeople need to look at their website and ask the simple question: "Is this working for me?"

There is one small thing you need to do after asking the question and that is define what you expect your website to actually do.  To help you make this decision here are a few ideas you may consider:

  • Is your website the main source of new business enquiries?
  • Is your website attracting the right type of enquiry for your business?  For instance if you are a criminal lawyer and your website only attracts family law business it isn't working for you.
  • Is your website listed in the first three pages of Google when searching for your main keyword phrase?

If you wish your website to be the front line of your marketing effort search engine optimization (SEO) is necessary to make your site an authority site in the eyes of the major search engines.  Today more people use the internet as the tool of choice to find local goods and services that use various telephone directories including the yellow colored variety. 

A recent survey carried out by Otec Performance Marketing indicates that more than 90% of businesses interviewed still use Yellow Pages as the major thrust of their marketing.  This seems to be a waste of resources when more than 50% (and growing) potential clients use internet search engines when seeking local goods and services.

Here is a little test you can carry out: Go to www.alexa.com and enter the URL of your website and see where it ranks.  If it states insufficient data then your website does not rank in the top 100,000,000 in the world.  For your site to be successful you need to be listed in the top 5 million using Alexa and the top 10 when your keyword is searched on Google.
